Dr. Chinkholal Thangsing, MBBS, FCAMS a recepient of the prestigious Royal Order of Sahametrei awarded by the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Karmaveer Purushkaar in India, graduated in medicine from the North Eastern Regional Medical College and a Postgraduate Fellow of the Christian Academy of Medical Sciences specialized in General Medicine, was trained in Applied Psychology, and work in the field of HIVAIDS. He is a physician dedicatedly working for over 25 years and treating HIVAIDS patients since 1990. Affectionately, known as ‘Lal’ he works as a clinician providing compassionate care and support and attend to the psychosocial needs of people infected and affected by HIVAIDS. His clinical practice handles various specialties and treats sexual health problems, HIVAIDS, promotes preventive medicine, promoting safe sex behavior, writes on medical issues and on sexual health for leading national papers and International magazines in India He also championed the rights to treatment for people living with HIVAIDS. He toured and lectures extensively on similar issues and regularly contributes a column on issues of safe sex, HIVAIDS nationally and internationally. He is a firm believer and a practice holistic approach of treatment which addresses the emotional, physical and spiritual well being of the total person.

Dr Thangsing founded and established a non profit charitable organisation the Touch of Hope Foundation in 1993 and is the founding President and CEO of the foundation. He was the Chief of Bureau of AIDS Healthcare Foundation – Global, United States of America’s largest nonprofit organization providing treatment and care for people with AIDS in 20 countries. Dr. C Thangsing heads the program in the Asia Pacific region which has HIVAIDS care and support, training, clinical preceptorship programs, prevention and advocacy programs in Cambodia, China, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Nepal.

Dr. C Thangsing founded and established various nonprofit charitable organizations. In 1996 he established Agency for Community Care and Development (ACCAD), he founded and set up a consortium of Physicians, The AIDS Care Physicians Alliance (ACPA), and the Founder President of ‘India Cares’ a trust committed to the address healthcare needs and the provision of comprehensive care program delivering services with compassion and understanding to the unserve and underserved. These organizations provide series with missionary zeal in public health, education, prevention activities and the provision of clinical care and support especially for people living with HIVAIDS. He is a pioneer in the holistic care services for HIVAIDS patients. He helps set up AIDS Clinics and conduct Home Based Care services program for AIDS patients in 1993. He assisted and provided his energy and expertise to nongovernmental organization and help established New Delhi’s first AIDS Care Home in 1998. Other programs and services he help initiated includes services for women and children, Crisis Care Center Shelter home for drug users with HIV, started the first specialized HIV Clinic in New Delhi. He set up various AIDS Care Homes in and assists in the running of many such homes for PLHAs. He lobbied for support and joined forces with corporate homes and pharmaceutical companies to organize and conduct numerous training programs on HIVAIDS Care and treatment for Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, Lawyers and activist groups and national and international organizations.

He is outspoken in his belief that all human beings, including those living with HIV/AIDS, have a fundamental right to basic medical services and care. He is on board and member of various organizations, committees, and ethical board member of various institutions in India and in the Asia Pacific Region, a founding member of Asia Pacific Neuro-AIDS Consortium, member advisor for Asia Pacific Pediatric AIDS consortium. His services and networks and linkages cross borders and he is involved in setting up programs and assistance globally.

He continues to combat HIVAIDS by assisting, supervising and consulting in HIVAIDS care programs of organization actively involved in the battles against HIVAIDS. He is committed to strengthening and assisting healthcare organizations in works in various portfolios – provider, caregiver, advisor, trainer, consultant, advocate, and activist for treatment provision, universal access, promoting safe sex behaviors, active awareness generation programs, sensitization and education of medical and healthcare professionals in Asia Pacific region.

Dr Chinkholal Thangsing has dedicated his medical career, and his personal life and resources to combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Asia Pacific region. He advocates, wherever and whenever possible, for a basic change of attitude within societies toward those afflicted with this devastating epidemic. He continues to tirelessly teach and preaches prevention – those changes in the personal behavior of individuals that must occur if the devastation being caused by the HIV/AIDS epidemic is to be deterred. Although he is frequently “a voice crying in the wilderness”, his dedication knows no bounds. Bursting with love for his fellow beings ‘Lal’ has a face as open and cheerful as the laughing Buddha, and a personality devoid of affectation. He is a man who has gone beyond the Hippocratic Oath, and redefined it.
